Audience Research

Image
Target audience 30-49 The demographic my music video is directed at would be people aged 30 to 49. This can include genres such as pop, country and sometimes classical, so it has a relatively wide variety compared to a demographic of current teenagers, who rarely listen to country or classical music, as their musical focus is mainly consumed by rap or pop music. The category of 30-49 is a very broad category as it could span from the 2000s to the 70s and 80s which can be highly contrasted.  The graph below is statistical data from statistia.com The table below shows the different artists associated with the target demographic of 30-49 My target audience includes artists such as Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, Arctic Monkeys, John Legend, Pink Floyd, Jack Savoretti, Billy Joel, David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, ABBA, Elton John, U2 and Bon Jovi. I have decided to start planning Twenty One Pilots' "Smithereens" after researching and looking throu...

Brief

A cross-media production for a new artist or band in a genre (or sub-genre/ hybrid) of your choice. Create an original music video and associated print or online material to promote the same artist or band. You should create a cross-media production for an established record label (such as Columbia or Parlophone) that is owned by a major conglomerate targeting a mainstream audience of 30-49 year olds with an interest in your chosen genre of music. The music video must be between 3 minutes and 3 minutes 30 seconds in length, and include the following:  Two or more filming locations (e.g. studio, rehearsal or live venue, or other locations)  Wide range of camera shots, angles and movement  Shots of the artist or band to establish a clear identity/image  Performance footage (rehearsal and/or live and/or lip synched)  Representations of at least one social group  Clear structure with an element of narr...

Parlophone

Image
Parlophone Records Limited (also known as Parlophone Records and Parlophone) is a German-British major record label founded in Germany in 1896 by the Carl Lindström Company as Parlophon. The British branch of the company was founded in 8 August 1923 as The Parlophone Co. Ltd., which developed a reputation in the 1920s as a leading jazz record label. On 5 October 1926, the Columbia Graphophone Company acquired Parlophone's business, name and release library, and later merged with the Gramophone Company on 31 March 1931 to become Electric & Musical Industries Limited (EMI). George Martin joined EMI in 1950 as assistant label manager, taking over as manager in 1955. Martin produced and released a mix of product including comedy recordings of the Goons, the pianist Mrs Mills, and teen idol Adam Faith. In 1962, Martin signed the Beatles, at the time an unknown struggling rock band from Liverpool. During the 1960s, with artists such as Cilla Black, Billy J. Kramer, th...

Columbia

Columbia Records is an American record label owned by Sony Music Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, the North American division of Japanese conglomerate Sony. It was founded in 1887, evolving from the American Graphophone Company, the successor to the Volta Graphophone Company. Columbia is the oldest surviving brand name in the recorded sound business, and the second major company to produce records. From 1961 to 1990, Columbia recordings were released outside North America under the name CBS Records to avoid confusion with EMI's Columbia Graphophone Company. Columbia is one of Sony Music's four flagship record labels, alongside former longtime rival RCA Records, as well as Arista Records and Epic Records. Artists who have recorded for Columbia include AC/DC, Adele, Aerosmith, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Beyoncé, Blind Willie Johnson, Blue Öyster Cult, Dave Brubeck, The Byrds, Johnny Cash, Mariah Carey, The Clash, Miles Davis, Ros...

Adele - Hello

The music video starts off with a clip of a window frame, with dead flies and cockroaches on the window ledge. The image is very unsaturated and looks like a clip taken from an old film. The camera stays in the same place but the focus is shifted onto the exterior, where a car is seen moving down a dirt road towards the house from a distance. We later find out that this is the singer of this song, Adele, and she is revisiting her old house which she hasn’t been to in a while from what the state of it looks like. There is no music as Adele enters the house, but we hear some dialogue of her talking to someone over the phone, saying she is losing signal, and then the call disconnects. This creates a sense of being separated from civilisation for the viewers watching the video, as Adele loses connection with whoever she was on the phone with. This shows us that Adele is visiting this house purely to reminisce on the past and to feel a sense of nostalgia, and sh...

Lil Nas X - Panini

Lil Nas X’s recently published music video "Panini" paints an everyday nightmare in which capitalism haunts every corner. It is most likely being used as a metaphor for how advertisements are targeted at an audience by the use of internet cookies to generate profits, but the accuracy of these matching our interests is scaring people. At the beginning of the video, a futuristic, interlocking font is used to label the music video. The largest font says “Panini” with Lil Nas X’s name above it, and the director Mike Diva credited below. A couple of seconds after the title is shown, a lot of sponsors are shown in the form of screens on buildings in New York Times Square. Sponsors such as FIAT, TikTok, acorns and Beats by Dre are introduced by Lil Nas X using their products. Skai Jackson is then shown sitting down looking at all of this while the camera slowly pans closer to her which creates suspense for the audience, and an idea that action will start soo...
